Wexner series to feature all of Sadie Benning's videos

by Kelzaad Kötwat

Commentary written about filmmaker Sadie Benning posits that she "has made some of the best pure cinema of the past ten years." The celluloid purist will be coming to

German Song, 1995

Columbus, courtesy of the Wexner Center, in conjunction with a retrospective of her work.

Video artist Benning is this year's recipient of the Wexner Center Residency Award in media arts, and Wexner's retrospective of her oeuvre this monthwill culminate in a live conversation with the artist.

Benning, of Chicago, is best known for her confessional, short video works that most often deal with issues surrounding the construction of female and lesbian identities. In the past years she has worked on many projects in the Wexner Center's Art and Technology studios, which has grown to be a laboratory for some of the best and most cutting-edge media artists in recent times. She has also performed at the Wexner Center with the seminal riot grrl band Le Tigre.

The three-night retrospective in February will feature all of her short videos from 1989

to the present, including such titles as Me and Rubyfruit, The Judy Spots and A Place Called Lovely, as well as two screenings of her longer work Flat is Beautiful.

In the onstage conversation on February 28, she will share examples from new video work created during her residency as well as her seldomseen work in painting and drawing.

A 44-page booklet for the series will include a new interview with Benning, a full filmography, and an introductory essay by Bill Horrigan, the Wexner Center's curator of media arts.

Benning is the latest recipient of a Residency Award in media arts, joining 18 past recipients. Her retrospective is part of an ongoing series of filmmakers' retrospectives at the Wexner Center.

Friday, February 13 at 7 pm Living Inside (1989), If Every Girl Had a Diary (1990), Me and Rubyfruit (1990), Jollies (1990), A New Year (1989), A Place Called Lovely (1991), It Wasn't Love (1992), Aerobicide-Julie Ruin (1998)

Benning's early videos are seminal in understanding her work and herself. These videos are centered on her struggles and attempts to imagine a positive lesbian identity complicated by teenage doubts and anxieties. She uses the camera as a surrogate, alternative diary as she documents her crushes and kisses. Benning also plays with gender stereotypes while embracing emotional extremes. The program's final piece, Aerobicide-Julie Ruin is the music video Benning created with BiKini Kill's Kathleen Hanna, just before they became Le Tigre.

Girl Power (1992), The Judy Spots (1995), German Song (1995), Flat is Beautiful (1998)

The band Bikini Kill provides the sound of Girl Power, a rowdy and blaring vision of what it meant to be a girl in the 1990s. The Judy Spots focuses on a hapless puppet named Judy, and German Song is an evocative music video for the Boston band Come.

Flat is Beautiful is Benning's most ambitious project to date, and it combines live action, animation, and dramatic scenes. Here, Benning sets about to examine the inner life of an androgynous 11-year-old girl who is being raised by a single mom and her gay

roommate.
